Ackerley Scholar Requirements

To:        Ackerley Scholars

From:   Jim Jones, Ackerley Computer Science and Technology Scholars Program Director

Re:      Requirements and expectations to be an Ackerley Scholar

Congratulations on being selected as an Ackerley Scholar for next year. Whether you are a new or renewing Scholar, you were chosen for your potential to contribute to the academic computer science and technology environment at Graceland. To continue as an Ackerley Scholar and be able to renew any grant associated with it in the years ahead, you must fulfill the responsibilities outlined below. The program pays for your membership dues in the ACM, trip expenses to attend selected conferences, and material costs for approved projects. I am happy to count you as one of the Ackerley Scholars and look forward to the next year with you in the program.

Academic Requirements

1.       To major in Computer Science (CS) or Information Technology (IT). You can major in multiple areas too.

2.       To maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA in your CS or IT major and overall.

3.       To be a full-time student making reasonable progress on your CS or IT degree, based on a 4-year plan.

4.       To maintain good habits for academic success (e.g., attendance, participation, work ethic, attitude). In particular, you should not show up on any midterm reports of students that are "at risk" due to poor habits.

Leadership Expectations

1.       To be active in Graceland's student chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM). This is a professional society for CS/IT students. Full attendance and active support are expected.

2.       To attend and participate in the regional ACM conferences in the fall and spring semester (e.g., attend all sessions, compete on Graceland's programming or robotics teams, present research findings).

3.       To influence the direction of the Ackerley program by offering ideas and assistance for special events, speakers, workshops, and projects.

4.       To participate in homecoming activities which promote our computing and technology programs (through demonstrations, exhibits, and greeting visitors).

Other Responsibilities

1.       To attend the regular meetings of all Ackerley Scholars and myself. These are usually informal and allow you to get to know others in the program.

2.       To be available for photos and interviews and allow information about you to be released to promote the Ackerley program (e.g., press releases, articles, official web sites).

3.       To send letters of appreciation to the donors who have made your scholarship possible. This will be done after the fall semester begins, when guidelines and addresses are provided to you.

I accept the responsibilities of an Ackerley Scholar and understand that I must meet these requirements for any grants associated with it to continue, subject to a decision by the Ackerley Scholars Program Committee.
