Faculty/Staff Webpages at Graceland

Overview

At Graceland, there are different servers that host web pages for departments, faculty, staff, and/or students. Different restrictions exist on each. The server's hostname (either its real or its alias name) is what you see at the beginning of the web address. Some of these servers are:

Questions and Answers

What server do I want my faculty website to be on?
Either on the W-Drive (academics.graceland.edu) or on Neo (personal.graceland.edu). Those are the only servers where you can create and change your own website.

Why would I want it on personal.graceland.edu?
Students can only have their personal web pages on this machine. Faculty may prefer to do the same so as to "be on the same page" with our students and to get help from students who have done it. You may like the ease for anyone to look up your website by simply going to personal.graceland.edu (or neo.graceland.edu) which gives a directory of everyone with a homepage on this server. You may feel that others are more likely to remember your full web address since it follows the same pattern as for student web addresses, e.g., if jdoe is your Graceland username then http://personal.graceland.edu/~jdoe is your home page address.

Why would I (as faculty) want it on academics.graceland.edu?
You may prefer the W-drive if you already are familiar with using it for classwork resources. You get a much larger 300MB space available to you, which is best if you offer lots of multimedia content on your website (slides, photos, audio, video, etc). You may prefer a web address that has your fullname and no tilda (~) in it, e.g., if your W-drive directory name is Doe John then http://academics.graceland.edu/DoeJohn is your web page address (note: remove any embedded spaces from the directory name for your web address).

Is one better than the other in case of a disaster/crash?
Both machines are backed up on a regular basis. You may want to keep your own backup of important files on your computer or burned on a CD since restoring lost files can be time consuming for tech support. Being a little paranoid and keeping your own backup is a good thing.

Where do other Graceland faculty host their websites?
The few Graceland faculty who have their own web sites have them on different servers. For example, Linda DeBarthe's is on the W-drive at http://academics.graceland.edu/DeBartheLinda, Jen Pouton's is on Neo at http://personal.graceland.edu/~poulton (same as http://neo.graceland.edu/~poulton), and Jim Jones' is on Trinity at http://csit.graceland.edu/~jsjones (same as http://trinity.graceland.edu/~jsjones). Some faculty manage class-related web pages on different servers that are handled by course-management systems (like eCollege). Ron Ellis (x5467) can advise faculty on these services and procedures.

Can I have web pages on more than one server (Neo, AcadFS, eCollege, etc)?
Yes. If you do so, it is best to do some planning about which server will hold which type of web pages (class-related, personal, large multi-media files, etc). You will want links from one site to the others, so that any student who happens to reach what they think is your main home page, can get to your other pages (especially your class related sites).

What's the easiest way to upload my web page files to personal.graceland.edu?
Use a Windows computer that is on the Graceland network and log on to it with your Graceland username. Select Start->Run and enter \\personal (or \\neo). Double-click the folder icon that has your username and then the folder icon named public_html. Everything you drag into this public_html folder is your website. Your main home page should be named index.html and it should have links to any other files that you want others to see.

What's the easiest way to upload my web page files to academics.graceland.edu?
Use a Windows computer that is on the Graceland network and log on to it with your Graceland username. Open the W-drive (or select Start->Run, enter \\AcadFS and then double-click Classwork). Double-click your way down to your Web subdirectory which is inside the directory with your LastnameFirstname on it. Everything you drag into this Web folder is your website. Your main home page should be named index.html and it should have links to any other files that you want others to see.

What's the easiest way to upload my web page files to csit.graceland.edu?
Use a Windows computer that is on the Graceland network and log on to it with your Graceland username. Select Start->Run and enter \\csit (or \\trinity). Double-click the folder icon that has your username and then the folder icon named public_html. Everything you drag into this public_html folder is your website. Your main home page should be named index.html and it should have links to any other files that you want others to see.

I entered what you said (above) in Start->Run but it did not work. How come?
First, make sure you started with two backslashes not two forwardslashes. For instance, \\neo is correct, but //neo is not. Second, make sure that you are using an office or lab PC that you have logged onto the Graceland network with your own username and password (you cannot do this with a computer logged in under a co-worker's username). Third, you cannot do it the simple way as specified if you are off campus or on the wrong side of our firewall. A workstation in an office or a PC Lab is okay, however classroom, dorm, and wireless connections are probably not. If that is the case you must do things differently, using a method that works from anywhere on the Internet (i.e., on-campus or off-campus) known as FTP (see below).

Okay then, how do I manage my web site from off campus?
You need to use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to transfer files between your computer and the server. FTP is an Internet standard that should work from anywhere. Open My Computer or if you cannot find it, press-E while holding down the Windows key (next to lower-left Ctrl key). Either of these should open a Windows Explorer window which has a location field near the top left of the window. Clear whatever is in the location field by clicking in the whitespace after whatever is showing there and backspacing until it is empty. Enter one of the following (depending on which server you are want to connect to), where USERNAME should be replaced with your Graceland username:
ftp://USERNAME@AcadFS.graceland.edu step-by-step
ftp://USERNAME@neo.graceland.edu
step-by-step
ftp://USERNAME@trinity.graceland.edu
(similar to neo)
A dialog box will ask you for your Graceland username and password. For neo or trinity you simply give your Graceland username and password to log in. However, for AcadFS it is DIFFERENT. For AcadFS you must prefix your username with "graceland" and a backslash (e.g., graceland\USERNAME). If successful, you should see icons that you can click or double-click to reach the folders and files of interest and be able to drag files back and forth to your computer's desktop or folders. It is important that you click your way down to the public_html folder (on trinity or neo) or your own Web folder (if on AcadFS) if you want to manage your web site files. Drag file icons back and forth between the Windows Explorer FTP window (which show the files on the server) and your desktop or folder windows (which show files on your local computer). This is how you download and upload files. You can download a file to your local computer, modify it in some way, and upload it to replace the one on the server. When you are finished doing file transfers, just close your FTP browser window.
Caution: to avoid confusion visit your web pages like everyone else does using its Universal Resource ID location. That begins with http://. If instead you double-click the web page file icons in your FTP or folder windows you may not see what others see.

I see my public_html folder together with other files and folders. What are they for?
On Neo, ignore all but your public_html folder. You can probably delete the others (contact Jim Jones x5294 for advice). If you accidentally copied web page files into the main directory that had your username on it instead of public_html then you should delete them since no one can see those files on the web.
