[back for more help topics].. [General info about websites at GU]
The following instructions are for Gracelanders who had webpages at personal.graceland.edu (alias brutus.graceland.edu). As of 1/27/06, the alias name personal will no longer refer to the server named brutus, but rather a new server named neo. You should move your website files to the new server after requesting that an account be set up. Your new account on neo will be limited to 10MB, but more is possible with some justification. Contact Jim Jones at x5294 for a new account on neo or to ask any questions about this.
Note: throughout these instructions I have used jdoe as the Graceland username for the fictional user named John Doe. You must replace jdoe with your own username for things to work.
These instructions assume a Windows-based computer connected to the Graceland network (i.e., an office or Lab PC). Mac owners can log on to one of the PC Lab computers in the library and follow these steps.
The tilde (~) symbol and your Graceland username are used in the URL
for your web site. The following three URL's are examples for jdoe:
http://personal.graceland.edu/~jdoe
http://neo.graceland.edu/~jdoe
http://brutus.graceland.edu/~jdoe
The first of these is merely an alias for the second (neo), but
it was an alias for the third (brutus) prior to 1/27/06. If the browser
displays Object not found then you do not have a web account set
up on the server specified in the URL (assuming you typed it correctly).
The current list of homepages on neo are at:
http://neo.graceland.edu
If you cannot do step 2 or 3, make sure you used backslashes, your own username, and no embedded spaces were typed. You can try just \\brutus and \\neo and then double-click on the folder with your username. If that does not work, make sure you actually logged on to an office or lab PC on the Graceland network using your own username (log off, back on, and try again). If it still doesn't work, then either you do not have an account on brutus and/or neo, or we have network problems. Contact Jim Jones for help.
If you run out of space in the midst of these steps you may need to delete some things and try again (sound, image, or movie files may be the problem). If you the error happened after trying to drag a folder over to neo, not all of its files were copied. Right-click the partial folder to delete it on neo, remove unneeded files on brutus, and try again. Few if anybody should run into this problem.
When talking to someone about your files and folder names, there can be confusion unless you see the entire name. If your filenames do not end with an extension (such as .htm, .html, .gif, etc.) then it may be that you have hidden this information from your view. To correct this, choose the Folder Options under the Tools menu in any folder window that is open. Then click on the View tab. Under Advanced Settings, make sure to uncheck the setting for "Hide extensions for known file types" and selecting the OK button.
You may have links in your webpages to pictures or other webpages stored on brutus. Usually these links will point to the new copies on neo as long as you copied all files and folders over with the same names and hierarchy structure as before. However, if you used absolute links (you probably know who you are) then the links will point to the old copies on brutus. To check that the new website links all work, right-click somewhere within to brutus public_html folder to create a new folder (call it OLD) and drag all of the other files and folders within public_html (on brutus) into it. This relocation will mess up the old web site and break any absolute links that need to be fixed. Check the new website to see if all is okay. If you have questions or need advice, then contact Jim Jones at x5294.
